Abstract

The years 1847 and 1848 were fraught with political turmoil in both Denmark and Prussia. The Danish King Christian VIII died on January 20, 1848. Beginning in February the Revolutions of 1848 began to spread across Europe. In March of 1848, large demonstrations took place in Berlin as nationalists demanded a constitution and the unification of Prussia and the German states. At the same time progressives in Denmark demanded a constitution from its new king. These events triggered the First Schleswig War, which broke out in March 1848. This conflict was fought between the Kingdom of Denmark and Prussia over the duchies Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg. This was a time of high nationalist sentiment on both sides of the border, and Hegelâs name was at times brought into the conflict. Hegel was satirized as âthe king of the philosophersâ in The Corsair in an article entitled âAn Episode, or the Prussian Burglary in Denmark.â Whether the cause was the nationalist wave or the war with Prussia or something else, the years 1847 and 1848 saw a dramatic drop in publications about Hegel
