Abstract

The year 1844 was very substantial for the Danish Hegel reception. The critical reaction to the left Hegelians began to expand, with leading cultural figures such as Mynster and Clausen feeling the need to add their voices to condemn the movement. A major dispute arose surrounding Peter Michael Stillingâs masterâs thesis Modern Atheism or the so-called Neo-Hegelianismâs Consequences of Hegelian Philosophy, in which the author criticizes the left Hegelians, while defending the right-Hegelian position represented by his teachers Martensen and Nielsen. This work provoked a cascade of critical responses from those sympathetic to the left-Hegelian cause. This same year SÃ¸ren Kierkegaard continued his great productivity publishing three important works that all engaged in one way or another with the Hegelians, namely, Philosophical Fragments, The Concept of Anxiety, and Prefaces.
