Abstract

1849 was a significant year for discussions in theology and the philosophy of religion. Martensen had not published anything substantial since the Examination Scandal at the end of 1841. Now in 1849 he felt that his position was sufficiently secure that he could present to the reading public something new. When his Christian Dogmatics appeared in the summer of 1849, he must have regarded it as his magnum opus and presumably expected many words of praise. His expectations were, however, disappointed, and with this work he set off what is known in Danish intellectual history as the debate about faith and knowledge which went on for two years.
