Abstract

As the Danish Golden Age began to wind down, the references to Hegel became less frequent. The days when Heiberg and Martensen could captivate young people with ideas from Hegel had long passed. Whatever might be called a Hegelian movement in Denmark was now dispersed, and what remained were individuals who made use of Hegel in the context of their different interests. Even the left Hegelian movement had lost its novelty by this time and had begun to fade. Hegel was no longer regarded as the loved or hated figure who had once been the focal point of heated debates. The final period of the Danish Hegel reception in the Golden Age comes to an end with the death of SÃ¸ren Kierkegaard in November of 1855 and the publication of Hans Friedrich Helwegâs article âHegelianism in Denmarkâ in December of the same year. When Kierkegaard died, so also did his long polemic with the Danish Hegelians, which so significantly influenced the character of his corpus. As Helwegâs article shows, by this time Danish Hegelianism was no longer a living and developing movement but, instead, had become an object of historical and academic interest
