Abstract

The end of the second period of the Danish reception of Hegel was marked by the so-called examination scandal at the end of 1841, when the Faculty of Theology at the University of Copenhagen denied the student Hans Brøchner his right to take the qualifying examination due to his open agreement with Strauss’ views. This controversial event signaled a shift in emphasis in the Danish Hegel reception by releasing the forces of the free thinkers in the kingdom. Emboldened, they began to speak more publicly and publish works in the spirit of the German left Hegelians, who served as their models. This can be said to signal the beginning of the third and final period of the Danish Hegel reception at the beginning of 1842. A clear break arose from the original, more conservative Hegel reception that came from Heiberg and Martensen, and a distinct new movement emerged
