Abstract

This chapter is aimed at appropriately contextualising global citizenship education (GCE) by drawing on the notion of relatedness as espoused in ukama in higher education in Zimbabwe. It is important to state that ukama falls within the broad scope of communally-orientated notions such as ubuntu. The choice of ukama is premised on the basis that it is concretely experienced in the context the author is familiar with.

The main argument in this chapter proceeds from the fundamental premise that in order to avoid irrelevance, GCE should draw from the knowledge, traditions and ethics of a given context. It is argued that ukama has tenets that may be appropriated in GCE.

Firstly, GCE should include local ethics and knowledge traditions for the promotion of humanity. Secondly, the need to re-conceptualise ukama stems from the fact that, currently, it is regionalist and can be regarded as an ethno-philosophy. I therefore seek to take GCE out of the class or lecture-halls to ordinary daily or “normal” experiences. In this way, GCE will be enriched.
