Abstract

Gender inequality and violence committed against women are serious threats to the three global commons of Global Citizen Education (GCE), as Torres and Bosio (2020) articulated, namely to work towards equality and democracy amid diversity and global peace and planetary wellbeing.

Consequently, the aim of the critical pedagogical reflections offered in this contribution is to illustrate how deliberative encounters, facilitated through the discomforting practice of appropriating film as a reflective surface, could ‘conscientise’ faith leaders. As a result, it would enable faith leaders to reflect on positional privilege and power, the systemic realities informing GBV, and how toxic theology gets transferred from one generation to another within institutions of faith. For most, this leads to the disquieting realisation that foundational faith truths that are held dear in faith communities could be life-denying for others.

Although the module under discussion does not shy away from ‘conscientising’ experiences of discomfort, it aims to create a safe and daring space where both educators and students can risk vulnerability to spark systemic institutional change so that the bodies of those excluded, harmed and violated can again matter.
