Abstract

This chapter proposes a global citizenship education (GCE) framework for critical consciousness development based on four pillars: de-colonialism, caring ethics, eco-critical views, and humanity empowerment.

Critical consciousness in Freirean terms refers to achieving an in-depth understanding of the world, allowing for the perception and exposure of social and political contradictions – and for identity development through a dialectic of local and global – which also entails transmitting to our students such immaterial values as a strong spirit of solidarity and treasuring humanity, coupled with an understanding that our planet is our home.

The aim of a critical consciousness GCE framework is then to assist students, particularly in the Global South, in reflecting critically on their opinions and to support them in being part of the creation of a new future with its roots in social justice and sustainability. The framework can potentially be employed in future studies following additional theoretical enhancement and the refinement of implementation strategies for GCE, especially from a critical and ethical standpoint.
