Abstract

The formation of global citizenship in students has become an institutional priority for many Higher Education Institutions (HEI s) around the world. This follows from the prominence Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is assuming as a result of the globalising contexts in which graduates from these institutions will have to work and live.

This chapter examines how HEI s in the Global South understand global citizenship as a normative concept and how it might be interpreted and implemented in their peculiar context. The chapter addresses this question by discussing the findings of a case study that investigated the views and experiences of institutional heads, lecturers and students in one African university on the topic of global citizenship.

The findings from the study show that there are dimensions of GCE in the curriculum of the case study institution. These GCE dimensions are however incidental and not the product of a planned curriculum. The chapter concludes that in order for the case study institution to leverage a conception of global citizenship that is appropriate to its socio-cultural and historical specificities, there is the need for intentionality in setting out curriculum inputs and outcomes as part of a planned curriculum for teaching global citizenship.
