Abstract

This contribution offers a detailed study on donations of lands, goods, rights, and income in the Holy Roman Empire and in Scandinavia to religious institutions of Livonia during the thirteenth century. The major donators were princes and higher nobles from the north-eastern parts of Germany and Sweden, who personally participated in the Livonian Crusade. At the same time, lesser noblemen, and a few noble women – as well as some merchants – were also active donators to Livonian religious institutions. The recipients of these grants were the bishops of Riga and the Premonstratensian Cathedral Chapter of Riga, the Cistercian Abbey of Daugavgrīva, the Order of the Brethren of the Sword, the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order, and the Holy Spirit Hospital in Riga. The grants served as a source of income for these Livonian religious institutions and played a valuable part in financing their efforts in Christianisation and crusading in Livonia. The most valued grants lay in areas on the western coast of the Baltic Sea, where these institutions invested in the further development of their goods by establishing mills and granges and claiming new farmland. These possessions remained important sources for revenue up to the mid-fourteenth century (for northern Germany) and even up to the mid-fifteenth century (for Sweden).
