Abstract

Thirteenth-century Livonia – what did this country look like? The volume of profound studies offers ample material to answer this question. Essentially, the volume presents even more than abundant material related to the internal situation, which is characterised by its diverse prerequisites and different processes of change, and which had to take into account the neighbourhood, as well as encounters with ethnically and culturally diverse peoples in the region. But, to a certain extent, a contemporary traveller who came from regions east of the Elbe and Saale rivers would have experience and knowledge that reflected a quite similar historical situation and development. In this respect, the hypothetical traveller in Livonia already knew about the enforcement of Christian norms against traditional pagan practices, about the ethnic-linguistic change of large areas to a Germania Slavica, about the methods of agricultural and infrastructural development according to the ‘German Law’, about the founding and construction of planned towns with the innovative social group of citizens, and about the involvement of ecclesiastical and secular lords in the consolidation of new social and economic structures – all in all, measures that led to an alignment that today is considered the medieval basis of ‘east central Europe’.
