Abstract

From the ninth to the eleventh century, so-called weight-based finance was prevalent in all of northern and eastern Europe, which means that currency (coins as well as silver artefacts) was weighed. After a break, new coined silver arrived in Livonia during the late twelfth century. By then, value was no longer measured by weighing just any silver, but specific coinage. Thus, silver now also acquired a specific price in money. As the result of the crusading conquest, a new, western-European-type political and administrative order was established in Livonia during the first decades of the thirteenth century. The rights of coinage belonged to the territorial lords that started to mint. The Livonian monetary standard in the thirteenth to fourteenth century followed that of Visby, with a few exceptions. The compulsory exchange of foreign coins for local currency may have been initiated during the thirteenth century there – first in Riga, and later in other major centres. Due to the small size of local coins in the late thirteenth and first third of the fourteenth century, large amounts were paid in both silver ingots and coins. It was not possible to count money until Livonia’s own countable coins were introduced by the late fourteenth century. However, the age of weight currency had already ended in Livonia in the early thirteenth century.
