Abstract

The history of the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea underwent a serious turn between 1150 and 1350. The introduction to the volume critically summarises the main research trends of the societal change in Livonia during and after the crusading conquest in the thirteenth century. In the research on medieval Livonia, the novel approaches resulted in increased interest in the question of continuity and a potential ‘compromise’ between the pre- and post-conquest society there. What happened in medieval Livonia included adaption, integration, and acculturation. The native majority gradually started to follow the patterns of the ‘German’ urban and elite culture. The new institutions introduced by conquerors as well could be effective only when they were able to change and adapt. At the same time, medieval Livonia took part in the general progress of medieval Europe, and not every innovation or change should be attributed to the conquest.
