Abstract

Effective leadership skills of school principals are synonymous with quality of teaching and learning in schools. This has been an accepted concept in most educational outcomes research. In many countries around the world, performance evaluation of school principals as leaders forms an intricate component of ongoing school evaluation and improvement strategies. Although it is generally agreed that documenting and improving the quality and effectiveness of school principal leadership in an authentic setting should be central to any evaluation process, very little has been said and done regarding the use of authentic evaluation tools. In an increasingly demanding value-based society, school principals are faced with decisions of ethics and morality, in an authentic setting, especially as they relate to deciding what is right, what is important and what is a priority. There is continued pressure within new global workplace “realities” for authentic leadership.

This chapter will explore the paradigm of authentic assessment and evaluation in authentic leadership with regards to school principals.
