Abstract

Authentic and performance assessments are recurrent terms in teacher education. However, their definitions and applications differ. Simulated learning environments have the capacity to address both assessment types. Assessing practicum performance has traditionally been limited to real life experiences in diverse school contexts, in diverse classroom settings, and assessed by a diverse range of mentors and assessors (Ledger & Fischetti, 2020). Virtual simulation offers a technological solution to prepare preservice teachers for these diverse contexts and moderate individual practices and performances within a controlled learning environment to mitigate the contextual differences outlined. Authentic simulated assessment tasks can be designed to replicate placement contexts, improve the self-efficacy of future teachers and in turn improve student performance. Pedagogies of practices (Grossman et al., 2009) provides a framework for analysing simulation as an authentic assessment tool for assessing student preparedness for practicum and performance moderation. This chapter builds on a conceptual review of literature in which the principles of authentic assessment and the features of teaching simulations will be outlined. We argue that a simulated learning environment is beneficial for addressing both authentic and performance assessments for preservice teachers and recommend strategies on how these principles can be applied within a initial teacher education using the lenses of five dimensions of authenticity.
