Abstract

Studying the Greek and international literature indicates that there is agreement as to the need and value of authentic evaluation in school. This is a necessary process not only for the performance of students but also for the implementation of educational goals, as defined by the curricula. Besides, if we want to talk about a healthy educational system, it should be open and enable its review and improvement. Such an educational system contributes to monitoring of the development of childrenâs knowledge and reflects the effectiveness of teaching and the skills of teachers (MacBeath, 2001). The authentic evaluation, which involves the teachers and the students, the parents and the educators in the process of evaluation, offers the above opportunity (Stiggins, 1994). In current chapter, therefore, we focused on the evaluation of the Pilot and Experimental Schools in Greece through the point of view of parents. Specifically, the aim of this chapter was to investigate, record and capture the views of parents whose children attend Pilot and Experimental schools, concerning the contribution and effectiveness of authentic evaluation as well as the achievement of educational goals, as they are formulated in the curricula. The research sample consisted of 240 parents. Regarding the results, the parents of students attending both Experimental and Pilot Schools have a positive view of their operation and their contribution in all aspects surveyed. They are also positive in terms of the evaluation of factors that affect the effectiveness of the educational process and the school unit in general.
