Abstract

Assessment has a critical role to play in developing the learners’ perception of not just how well they learn but also how they can identify themselves as an authentic learner. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the way of how we can address the issue of humanising mathematics education in terms of authentic assessment. The empirical material is drawn from the case study of Sarah – a story about a five-year old girl through which the inquiry into the development of authenticity for self and her own learning would be undertaken. The phenomenological inquiry draws on what began as a humanistic action research project, comprising a university educator, a parent, discourse, observation and documentation, into which the re-conceptualisation of authenticity was unfolded through the girl’s questioning into how she could make sense of learning itself. The purposeful choosing of Sarah as the targeted research subject came from the author’s conversation with her mother touching on the issue of what a parent could do for fostering a child’s well-being through assessing authentically learning in general and learning mathematics in particular. The findings of the study unfolded the child’s innate predisposition towards choosing to choose what mattered to her own learning as an authentic learner. And the study reinstates the advocacy of humanising mathematics through the designing of authentic assessment for learning mathematics itself in view of the learners’ struggling over the dominant accountability assessment discourse.
