Abstract

Capstones are well recognised as a culminating and integrating experience in higher education creating important opportunities for students to engage in authentic and transformative learning. Authentic learning and assessment is undeniably critical to effective capstone course design and teaching, and to education more broadly. This chapter presents a unique case study of authentic assessment in a capstone course which encompasses innovative, industry relevant assessment and learning approaches and practices. We draw upon our professional learning partnership to reflect upon and analyse our experiences in designing and, in the case of the first author, teaching a final year capstone course in Construction Management. The first author works as an industry fellow and early career educator within a Built Environment Faculty where the second author worked as Academic Developer. We situate our study in the literature to identify the particular characteristics of course design and assessment, which created authentic learning experiences for students. We analyse the student experience via quantitative and qualitative course experience data captured from 2016 to 2020 and apply Rule’s (2006) authentic assessment principles to determine the degree and nature of authenticity that the course provided. By triangulating our reflections, good practice principles and course experience data we provide valuable findings and practical strategies to support educators to foster authentic assessment for and of learning (Boud, 2000).
