In an ever changing world, the role of veterinarians has evolved over the years. Not only do they care for the health and welfare of animals but they also have an integral role in the worldâs food production. Thereâs a societal wish for nature inclusive food production systems, Thereâs however no clear definition of nature inclusive farming systems yet. The current political and societal discussion around those systems are adding yet another layer to the complex framework in which veterinarians have to work every day. In this paper we examine potential dilemmas that veterinarians can face in the transition to nature inclusive farming systems within the context of the core values stated in the European Veterinary Code of Conduct (FVE, 2019). These core values of the Code cover, amongst others, the relation of veterinarians with animals, clients, society and the environment. All of those can result in a multitude of practical dilemmas but also in more philosophical dilemmas when transitioning to more nature inclusive farming systems. Practically speaking, the restricted use of certain medicines, an increased exposure of animals to vector-borne diseases and wildlife can cause dilemmas for veterinarians when performing their work. Moreover, Thereâs also a lack of knowledge on how the transition to those farming systems eventually will affect animal health and welfare. From a more philosophical point of view, veterinarians may need to develop new skills as a âsystems basedâ expert. In traditional farming systems Thereâs usually one âisolatedâ production goal e.g. milk. In more nature inclusive systems this changes into a more system based approached in which the whole farm functions as an eco- system that contributes to food production and nature management. This might require veterinarians to rethink some of their personal values providing care to their patients. They may also face uncertainties due to requirements form legislation and quality assurance systems. To get further insights into the potential dilemmaâs we used the nominal group technique in a focus group of 9 veterinarians interested in nature inclusive farming systems. In conclusion, the move towards nature-inclusive farming systems presents veterinarians with diverse challenges that require timely evaluation and discussion. Since veterinarians are an integral part of safeguarding food production their dilemmaâs concern all of us.
