This volume presents a new account, informed by recent scholarship on ancient narrative fiction, of a world that calls to mind the scenes of the Palestrina mosaic, with ships traversing the Nile delta, hippopotamus hunting, religious processions and festivities, and leizurely sightseeing. The commentary argues that the author was most probably an erudite Alexandrian with a polymathic interest in topics as diverse as the arrival of the phoenix in Heliopolis, contemporary art, medical theories of the function of blood in causing psychological imbalances in the young, herbal remedies for poisoning, and the colour of Nile water in glass.
John Hilton is a researcher in Classics at the University of the Free State, South Africa. He has published widely in the fields of the ancient Greek and Roman novel, Classics Reception Studies, ancient slavery, Roman Law, and onomastics.
"However, the structure and conciseness of the Introduction, the layout of the commentary, and the Appendixes make the volume one of the most user-friendly books of its kind. At the same time, Hiltonâs volume is a thorough and essential resource for scholars and students of Achilles Tatius, the Greek novel, and the Second Sophistic period. It provides a comprehensive and insightful analysis of Achilles Tatiusâ work, shedding light on its literary and cultural dimensions."
