Abstract

This is the article written by Oskar Pfister, the Swiss Reform Church pastor and psychoanalyst who was a close friend of Sigmund Freud. A selection of their letters are discussed in another chapter of this volume. This article is Pfister’s review of Freud’s book, The Future of an Illusion, that was printed in the journal Imago under the title “The Illusion of the Future.” Freud’s book declares religion a neurosis that had no future; Pfister declares that religion is an illusion that had a future. He wrote that Freud’s faith in science was erroneous and that Freud put too much faith in its future. He defends religion on the basis of Jesus’ teaching and the fact that many scholars supported his viewpoint. Freud gave Pfister permission to write this review. [Editors]
