On Ã©tudie ici les emplois des propositions conditionnelles du type á¼á½±Î½ + subjonctif, ainsi que ceux des propositions temporelles avec á¼ÏÎµá½±Î½ + subj. On essaie de dÃ©montrer quââ¯il y a une diffÃ©rence fondamentale, pour les subordonnÃ©es introduites par á¼á½±Î½, entre celles qui ont valeur de futur et celles qui ont valeur âgÃ©nÃ©riqueâ. Dans les propositions qui rÃ©fÃ¨rent au futur, á¼á½±Î½ + subjonctif exprime quââ¯il est fort possible que lââ¯Ã©tat de choses en question se rÃ©alise. (Tandis que Îµá¼° + indicatif futur ne prÃ©sente aucune indication quant au degrÃ© de probabilitÃ©, et que Îµá¼° + optatif indique que la rÃ©alisation de la condition est considÃ©rÃ©e comme simplement possible). Les propositions avec á¼ÏÎµá½±Î½ + subj., par contre, sââ¯ils rÃ©fÃ¨rent au futur, expriment que la rÃ©alisation de lââ¯Ã©tat de choses est pratiquement certaine.

Ces deux types se trouvent Ã©galement dans des phrases gÃ©nÃ©riques, cââ¯est-Ã -dire des phrases qui font partie des descriptions dââ¯habitudes. Comme il sââ¯agit dans ce cas-lÃ de faits (prÃ©sentÃ©s comme) rÃ©els, il est impossible de dire que á¼á½±Î½ + subjonctif exprime que la rÃ©alisation de lââ¯Ã©tat de choses est âfort possibleâ, á¼á½±Î½ + subjonctif exprime plutÃ´t que lââ¯Ã©tat de choses nââ¯est pas rÃ©alisÃ© en toute occasion possible, et donc seulement de temps Ã autre dans la situation en question, á¼ÏÎµá½±Î½ + subj., par contre, prÃ©suppose la rÃ©alisation de lââ¯Ã©tat de choses, ce qui veut dire que lââ¯Ã©tat de choses est toujours rÃ©alisÃ© dans la situation en question.

Abstract

In this article the uses of conditional clauses of the type á½³á½±Î½ + subjunctive, and those of temporal clauses involving á¼ÏÎµá½±Î½ + subj., are examined. It is argued that there is a fundamental difference between âfutureâ á¼á½±Î½-clauses and âgenericâ á¼á½±Î½-clauses. In clauses having future reference, á¼á½±Î½ + subjunctive expresses that it is quite possible that the state of affairs concerned will be realised (as against Îµá¼° + future indicative, which present no indication as to the likelihood of the realisation of the state of affairs, and Îµá¼° + optative, which expresses that it is just possible that the state of affairs will be realised). á¼ÏÎµá½±Î½ + subj. clauses, on the other hand, if they have future reference, express that realisation of the state of affairs is virtually certain.

Both types are also used in generic clauses, i.e. clauses occurring in descriptions of habits. Since in this case facts are described, it makes no sense to say that á¼á½±Î½ + subjunctive expresses that realisation of the state of affairs is âquite possibleâ. Rather, á¼á½±Î½ + subjunctive expresses that the state of affairs is realised sometimes, i.e. not on all possible occasions in the given situation, á¼ÏÎµá½±Î½ + subj., on the other hand, presupposes the realisation of the state of affairs, which means specifically that the state of affairs is always realised in the given situation.Â [132]
