Abstract

This chapter, which was originally published as AppendixÂ III to Rijksbaronâs commentary on Platoâs Ion (2007), poses the question whether, at Ion 530d9, ÏÏÎ¿Î»á½´Î½ á¼ÎºÏÎ¿á½±ÏÎ±ÏÎ¸Î±Î¹ (the reading of S and F, with aorist infinitive) or ÏÏÎ¿Î»á½´Î½ á¼ÎºÏÎ¿á¾¶ÏÎ¸Î±Î¹ (the reading of T, with present infinitive) is the better reading. After a number of general observations on the dynamic infinitive and the manuscripts of Plato, an overview of all occurrences of á¼ÎºÏÎ¿á¾¶ÏÎ¸Î±Î¹ and á¼ÎºÏÎ¿á½±ÏÎ±ÏÎ¸Î±Î¹ in the Platonic corpus is given, from which it appears that the former, presenting the âlisteningâ as open-ended, often has an iterative meaning or denotes a general line of conduct (âlend oneâs earâ), whereas the latter presents the âlisteningâ as an action in its entirety, from beginning to end. It is next shown that ÏÏÎ¿Î»á½µ, both in Plato and elsewhere, is more often followed by a present infinitive than by an aorist one, and that in the latter case it is always negated. It is concluded that, although most editors prefer the aorist, the present infinitive is the better reading in the Ion passage.
