This study is part of a qualitative research dissertation undertaken in Guatemala and Mexico. It examines the experiences and attitudes of teachers who participated in a US-based organization's efforts to provide transnational professional development for teachers. The study asks: How do participants in cross-border professional development make sense of their experiences when they return to their classrooms and communities? The research methods include open-ended questionnaires, interviews, document analysis, and participant observation within a critical sociocultural framework. The goals of the study are to contribute to the decolonization of society and academia, as well as to inform various types of organizations that carry out transnational educational exchanges. Here teachers are grouped into three categories of agents of change: in economic marginalization, in bilingual intercultural pedagogy, and in combating their own prejudices and stereotypes.
