This chapter presents the findings of ethnographic research undertaken in 2010, which explores the language policies that Indigenous Mexican migrants in the US implement in their homes and with their families. The research examines how political, social, and economic stratification related to identity, as well as perceived experiences of discrimination, can influence how parents negotiate their children’s linguistic repertoires. The findings suggest that because the Indigenous Mexican mothers interviewed believe there is a generally negative attitude toward Indigeneity in Mexico and the US, they have chosen not to pass their Indigenous language(s) onto their children to spare them from the discriminatory experiences they themselves have encountered.
