Abstract

This chapter reports on a survey of 209 students of Coventry University that explores the relationship between how they use a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and the perceived benefits, and their personal positioning in terms of three broad approaches to learning derived from Entwistle and Ramsden¹ and Biggs.² Little difference is apparent between those adopting âdeepâ âstrategicâ and âsurfaceâ approaches. The findings are suggestive of a âminimum specificationâ for VLE use that has educational benefits for learners, where tutors make course information and learning materials available online. However, it seems that those adopting a âdeep approachâ are more likely to perceive benefits for their learning.
