Workplace Learning is seen by policy-makers as an effective strategy for the development of vocation, career and professional identity. In dualized learning environments, learning at school and learning at work is integrated. The focus on learning competencies is a central issue of recent innovations in higher professional colleges. In this paper we explore the effects of the dual learning environments in higher professional colleges in the Netherlands. The central question is whether the characteristics of dual learning environments influence competency development. To realize this goal, we have measured competency development in relation to personal characteristics and the characteristics of the learning environments by conducting an electronic survey. This paper shows the results of the Technical sector in the Netherlands. In general, the findings show that studentsâ results are influenced by the characteristics of the learning environment, especially âachieving learning goalsâ, âthe contentâ and âcooperation between school and training companyâ.
