This chapter commences by considering perspectives on teaching through modelling and applications, followed by a review of research on specific aspects within the field. Studies exploring connections between modelling and complex situations, including topics such as teachers’ models of learning and student sense making in modelling situations are then examined. In a section on methodological tools in modelling research alternative developments, including a framework for identifying student blockages and reflection tool design, are reviewed. A wider view on curriculum change involving mathematical modelling precedes the final section in which the current situation in modelling and applications research is reviewed.
