During the last decade, biomimetic strategies have been developed to improve the biocompatibility of artificial surfaces by promoting tissue/implant integration. For several cell types, it has been suggested that control of cell behaviour on substrata is, at least partly, sugar-mediated. Our multidisciplinary effort aimed at endowing biomaterial surfaces with appropriate properties to control cell behaviour by using immobilization of enzymatically tailored pectins. Techniques for tailoring Rhamnogalacturonan-I (RGI) side-chain structure by specific enzymes were used. Modified RGI hairy regions (MHRs) decorated with or without side chains were obtained from apple, carrot or potato pectins. Polystyrene (PS) Petri dishes, aminated by a plasma deposition, were surface modified by the covalent linking of MHRs. Here, we report some biological results which illustrate that MHRs differing in charge, molecular weight, degree of branching and acetylation differently control cell behaviour. Such studies pave the way for the design of intelligently-tailored biomaterial coatings, able to induce specific cell functions.
