During the growing season of a potato crop late blight is controlled with approximately 15 sprays. Spray technology affects spray deposition and biological efficacy. In a series of field experiments the effects of spray volume, nozzle type, spray quality, dose and air assistance were examined. In addition the effect of sprayer boom movement on variation in spray deposition and protection against late blight was also determined. Spray dose was varied between full dose, 75% and 50% of the recommended rate, including non-treated plots. Spray interval was fixed either at a weekly or a fortnight interval to both mimic normal commercial practice and to stress fungicide performance. Spray deposit was measured in a quantitative and a qualitative way by, respectively using, a fluorescent tracer and water sensitive papers. Foliar late blight infestation was evaluated at a weekly interval. Results show that air assistance (5/8 of full capacity) increased spray deposits on the leaves of the whole potato crop by 8% more than that gained with conventional practice. Spray deposition patterns within the crop also changed with the use of air assistance; quantities retained at the top, middle and bottom leaf levels were different from those attained conventionally with more spray being able to penetrate through the canopy to lower leaf areas and more being retained on lower leaf surfaces. Ground deposits did increase in some experiments by the use of air assistance. Late blight control was improved by using air assistance when spraying at weekly intervals. In general, increasing the length of this spray interval to two weeks - and/or reducing dose rates - caused the level of late blight control to be decreased. In a separate series of experiments, sprayer boom movement - an effect also known to have a high influence on deposit variability - was measured for a sprayer passing along the same track within the potato field. Boom movements were affected with growing season since track conditions changed as a consequence of the repeated passage over them. Spray deposition was measured over a 10 m crop row length and patterns of variation related to sprayer boom movement explain the interaction. Sampled potato leaves from along this 10 m length, having had their spray deposits recorded, established the correlation between spray deposition patterns, efficacy and subsequent level of protection against late blight.
