Health is a fast growing concern of the human society. The stronger focus on health demands safe foods. Wheras formarly control was mainly concentrated on product control, today public control includes the individual animals from birth till slaughter.
The new control concept requires a unique identification system for all individual animals. Globalization of the industry and trade lead to the additional requirement of an international / world-wide compatible identification system.
Historically identification and registration of individual animals has been limited to the breeding part of a population. Different identification systems have been practiced, variing from colour description to double plastic eartags. Compatibility across countries and often within countries was not possible or in practice difficult to build up.
High requirements and the diversity of traditional identification systems led to the regulation Nr. 820 / 97 in which the EU introduced in 1997 a comprehensive system on „Identification and registration of cattle and labelling of beef and beef products».
Today all EU countries maintain a system for identification and registration according to the EU – regulation. It is possible to display centrally the complete life history of each individual.
In case of any disease or feedstuff problem it has been successfully proven to identify the animals related to the problem at short notice, wherever the animals are or have been kept or have been slaughtered.
Together with the beef labelling system today it is practiced to withdraw beef products from the stores “over night”.
The EU – identification and registration systems has proven undoubtly as the key for a highly efficient veterinary control and consumer protection system.
