Dairy farmers have always been eager to compare their herds to others. DairyMetrics enables producers and consultants to access DHIA herd information for benchmarking. This web-based system uses the internet to provide a comparison of a single herd to a group of herds selected at runtime. By selecting herds with similar characteristics such as production level, herd size or services per conception, users have been able to determine how their herds compare to others. The database includes herd summary information from 14 000 DHIA herds with 1.7 million cows processed by the Dairy Records Management Systems centre. Currently, 85 data variables can be compared from the main categories of general, production, udder health, reproduction and genetics. Consulting veterinarians can compare a client herd to a defined cohort group or to a selected group of herds. DairyMetrics provides statistics for cohort herds, including: number of observations, mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum. It also presents percentiles for each parameter in comparison to the cohort group. Extension personnel can use DairyMetrics to evaluate dairy production parameters for a county, state or region.
