Food safety has become increasingly important from both the perspectives of consumer and retailer. This has resulted in a demand to have systems in place that allow greater confidence in the product’s safety through risk management programmes, QA programmes, and the ability to undertake both traceback and traceforward.

Industry and government requirements to record farm events are increasing as a result of these food safety requirements. New Zealand dairy manufacturers require on-farm recording to provide the necessary food safety assurances to overseas markets. Animal recording is also needed so that key diseases can be detected and controlled or eradicated from the New Zealand dairy herd. Disease management is also necessary to optimize on-farm productivity by reducing the impact of endemic diseases, address animal welfare issues and identify new disease risks.

This paper describes the Livestock Improvement National Database and associated data collection and reporting systems. This individual animal database has unique features that have provided information to the New Zealand dairy industry for many years. A number of new technologies including handheld computers and web based applications that offer time saving solution for recording and reporting disease information will be discussed.
