Australia’s cattle industry commenced developing the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) in 1996. The Government of Victoria distributed about 1 million RFID button eartags to initiate the NLIS in that state. Producers are now charged $A 2.50 per tag. The rate of adoption of the NLIS is increasing following changes required by the EC regarding identification of cattle destined for processing for export to the EU and adoption of electronic ID to improve efficiency of milk recording. A further increase in adoption of electronic ID will result from the recent decision to mandate the identification with NLIS devices, all Victorian cattle born after 1 January 2002. The experience of the Australian dairy industry with electronic identification technology indicates that it is well accepted and robust enough to become the standard means of herd recording in Australia.
