The article focuses on the reception of Bruno Schulzâs fiction in Danilo KiÅ¡âs novel PeÅ¡Äanik (Hourglass, 1972). It deals with the complex patterns of intertextual relationship one can observe in this novel, where the âTraktat o krompiruâ (âTreatise on the Potatoâ) alludes to Schulzâs âTraktat o manekinachâ (âTreatise on Tailorsâ Dummiesâ). Comparative inquiry into the functions of these striking textual echoes has seldom been undertaken. This essay tries to cast light upon the way in which KiÅ¡ refers to Schulzâs text. In summary, the sophisticated intertextual play is considered to be a mode of literary response to the Shoah.
