Abstract

This chapter demonstrates that some functions encoded in the grammatical system are incorporated into the properties of verbs and nouns. These inherent properties come into play when the given function is to be represented in the utterance. These properties are irrelevant when other functions are expressed in the utterance. The evidence for the proposed hypothesis is provided by cross-linguistic analysis of (1) lexical categories and their functions in propositions; (2) adpositions and their functions in locative predications in Korean; (3) perfective and imperfective aspects in Polish; (4) verbal number in Polish; (5) benefactive predication in English; and (6) relational nouns in Gidar (Central Chadic). The main implication of the study in the present chapter is that properties of some lexical items in some languages reflect functions encoded in the grammatical system. Therefore, a description of lexical items must include those properties. The study attempts to answer an open question as to why some functions coded in the grammatical system are reflected in the lexicon and other functions are not.
