Abstract

Most recent studies of the formation of the Pauline corpus in antiquity pay passing attention to a theology of Scripture that might locate their historical analysis of the canonical process dogmatically or even in the social world of canonization and the theological controversies that shaped it. While this essay provides an historical account of the early church’s formation of the canonical collection of Pauline letters and the status of Hebrews as a member of it (or not), it also aims to present a theological reflection of this reconstruction as integral to the church’s understanding of it. It is the contention of this essay that the church came to “recognize” the final or canonical form of its two-testament Scripture in the fullness of time under the aegis of God’s Spirit in order that this same Spirit might inspire the church’s practice of its Scripture to “recognize” what it is by divine grace: one holy catholic and apostolic church.
