Abstract

This essay defends the mid-second century as the period for the reception of the core of the New Testament books. It also identifies the early third century (with antecedents in the late second) as the period for the fixed New Testament. It defends an impetus for the canon reaching from the New Testament books themselves, rising from the expectation of covenant documents with the inauguration of the new covenant and the Old Testament prophetic expectation. The early manuscripts of the New Testament show a standardized format and a use in the worship of the church that places these books on par with the Old Testament as Scripture. After addressing complicating factors that skew modern understanding of the status of the canon, the essay defends the proposed date by looking at the reception of the books outside the core canon through the lists of the early church.
