Abstract

This essay examines how the Pauline letters and Hebrews gained canonical recognition by two means. The first means is to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the major theories regarding how the Pauline letter collection came into being, and from these theories, in conjunction with examination of the historical, textual, and authorial evidence, to propose a theory of Pauline personal involvement that encompasses the thirteen-letter Pauline corpus. The second means is to examine Hebrews in relation to the Pauline corpus, especially as its placement within this corpus shifts, to draw some conclusions about how Hebrews was viewed and then accepted in the early church.
