Acknowledgments
This book became possible due to professor Ross King’s diligent efforts. In 2017, professor King recommended that I file a request with Brill to publish an English translation of my monograph. I would like to personally thank professor King for his personal involvement and valuable comments suggested throughout the process of editing the book.
The grant allocated by the Scientific Fund of National Research, Higher School of Economics (HSE) University, for the translation of my monograph into English, and the financial assistance from the Scientific Research Center Korё saram in Jeonju, Republic of Korea, made my project possible. I would like to specifically thank the director of the Center, Professor Yun Sang Won for his support throughout all of the project’s stages.
I would like to thank the staff of the Center for Academic Writing at the Higher School of Economics for their indispensable help and support. I would also like to thank Dr. Konstantin Sheiko, who spent a year editing this text. Without his professional knowledge on the history of the USSR, this book would have long awaited its publication.
I would like to thank PhD student Sil Jin from the Republic of Korea at the Institute of Russian History at the Russian Academy of Sciences for her help in translating and transliterating Korean names and geographic titles into English.
I thank Svetlana Ku-Degai for her invaluable and long service dedicated to the collection of archival materials on Koreans who were victims of political repressions in the USSR.
Finally, I would like to thank all of my colleagues and my children Inna, Alexander and Elena for their moral support and technical assistance.
