Abstract

The theme of this essay is the notion of adequacy as Scotus employs it to explain the procession of the persons in the Trinity. In the Trinity, an account is required as to why there are only three persons and not more or less. Scholastic authors then would consider whether the number of persons could be proven by reason or was only knowable by faith. In his early Oxford period, Scotus argued that two persons and only two persons were produced, because the divine essence had only two productive powers, the intellect and the will. But when we consider the later revisions and annotations to the Ordinatio, as well as his Parisian teaching, it becomes clear that Scotus came to see the argument from adequacy as insufficient to account for the number of persons in the Trinity, and turned rather to his account of individuation through a haecceity. This is an application of Scotus’ revised Parisian treatment of individuation found also in the debate with William Peter Godinus and in Scotus’ Quodlibet.
