Abstract

In the university era, outside their own schools, theologians often made their marks as masters. John Duns Scotusâ period as Franciscan regent master at Paris was the academic year 1306â1307, when he produced his Quodlibet, before departing for Cologne. We can contextualize Scotusâ Quodlibet and his early reputation outside his order through the surviving writings of other Parisian masters from the time: the Cistercian of James of ThÃ©rines, the Carmelite Gerard of Bologna, the Dominican Hervaeus Natalis, the Augustinian Henry of Friemar the Elder, and the seculars John of Pouilly and Thomas of Bailly. This paper attempts to establish some dates, introduces Friemar and Pouilly, and examines their contemporary quaestiones ordinariae on issues on which Scotus had a significant long-term influence, the procession of the Holy Spirit (Friemar) and divine foreknowledge (Pouilly). Rather than reveal Scotusâ early impact, however, these questions reflect how busy Parisian theologians were with other matters, as John of Pouillyâs battle with the followers of Henry of Ghent indicates. An edition of Henry of Friemarâs Quaestio ordinaria 3 is printed as an appendix.
