Abstract

The present paper deals with the thinking of Vissarion Grigorievich Belinsky, a Russian literary critic from the first half of the 19th century, whose intellectual legacy was often described as prophetic, inconsistent, and revolutionary. I would like to argue that, by taking into consideration the context of Belinskyâs time, we can apply another perspective and come to more favorable conclusions. Thus, the main aim of the paper is to offer an interpretation of the content of Belinskyâs thought, which highlights consistent elements and emphasizes its rebellious character, without labelling it as prophetic or revolutionary. We are particularly interested in the category of âactualityâ as a common thread of his entire work as a literary critic. This leads to the hypothesis that Belinskyâs specific use of that category provides us with the content of a critical model of thinking, which, nevertheless, can appear as revolutionary within a specific context.
