Abstract

This is an essay about Jesuit theorhetoric, the Ignatian way of speaking to, for, and about God. I deal first with the retreatant’s internal experience of Ignatian rhetoric in the Spiritual Exercises and then rhetorically examine how effects of that experience have influenced responses to external political events. The first part uses virtue ethics and epistemology to describe the retreatant’s performance of the Exercises, while the second explains how interpretations of that performance generated a Jesuit theorhetoric used to intervene in national and international politics, citing examples of two Jesuits, Gaston Fessard (1897–1978) in the 1960s and Michael Czerny (b.1946) today. Overall, this essay promotes a rhetorical-hermeneutic take on the connection between Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit political theology and presents theorhetoric as a specific instance of rhetoric defined as the use of signs in a context to have persuasive, figurative, and narrative effects.
