Abstract

The Jesuit Francisco de Castro (1567–1632) published two editions (Córdoba, 1611, and Seville, 1625) of his De arte rhetorica dialogi quatuor (Four dialogues on rhetoric). Similarly to other Jesuit handbooks on rhetoric printed previously in Spain, this text aimed to provide students with a compendium of this subject. Castro’s work coexisted with De arte rhetorica libri tres (Three books on rhetoric) by Cyprian Soarez, S.J. (1524–93) and may have substituted it at some point. In order to compose an updated textbook, Francisco de Castro combined information drawn from classical sources and from Jesuit and non-Jesuit modern works. This combination of sources is especially relevant in the 1625 edition, where quotations from recent books have already been identified. In this paper, I have focused on another source, Erasmus’s De duplici copia verborum ac rerum commentarii duo (Two commentaries on the two-fold abundance of words and ideas), whose influence on Castro’s manual may explain the treatment of the kinds of digressions in the first dialogue and why the Jesuit rhetorician dealt there with the rhetorical exercise called chria.
