This text considers how the rallies held in Piazza Venezia promoted charismatic leadership and contributed to the apparent consensus achieved by the regime. Distinguishing among the three genres of balcony appearances enables a more nuanced appreciation of Mussolini’s use of them for reinforcing regime initiatives and policies, as well as his own rulership. Statistical analysis and a bar graph plotting the waxing and waning of these urban events illustrate the relationship to political goals.
