Kleist’s Works
Kleist’s stories are referred to in the format “[volume]/[name] [page]”. “Volume” refers to Erzählungen and Erzählungen. Zweiter Theil, which are mirrored by the two volumes of this edition (I and II). “Page” refers to source pages (as indicated in the stories’ margins) rather than the page numbers of this edition, since these may vary between publication formats.

Annotation Notes
Italics in source-side annotations (L) indicate the title of the cited dictionary entry, and in translation-side annotations (R) any text from the source or translation.
No column or page numbers are given for annotated dictionary entries, since all entries are referenced by name. The individual dictionaries’ classification systems have been retained for reference, as has outdated orthography such as DWB’s capitalisation practice.
Unusual words or phrases that recur within a story are only annotated on their first occurrence; where they recur in other stories within this volume, cross-references to the original annotations are provided. Recurrences in Volume 1 have been annotated separately there, reducing the need for cross-referencing between the volumes.
Cited Previous Translators
