Abstract

The last case study brings us back to Vienna and to the same rooms used by Prince Eugen in Upper Belvedere half a century earlier, only no longer used as a residence. Upper Belvedere now housed the Imperial paintings collection and became a building entirely dedicated to the display of art, presenting a hang that in its separation of schools, periods, and genres marked the gradual transition away from the period covered in this book. By September 1781, the collection, with its remarkable collection of Rubens, Raphael, etc, was arranged in the Upper Belvedere. It had been prepared by the gallery director Joseph Rosa, landscape painter and professor of the Dresden Academy, and was then planned and executed by the Swiss print editor Christian von Mechel who worked in an advisory position without pay. Von Mechel’s catalogue describing the new hang appeared in 1783, a French version in 1784. The Upper Belvedere claims an intermediary position between the conversational comparative hangs of the mid-century and the linear hangs of the following decades.
