Abstract

In the middle of the eighteenth century, the Dresden gallery joined the rank of Europe’s leading paintings collections through an extraordinary acquisition campaign and was also amongst the most widely recognized. Like other collections in Dresden, it was not only outstanding by the quality of its holdings but also through new principles of display. The exceptional rank of the Dresden collections is due to Friedrich August I (1670–1737) and in particular Friedrich August II of Saxony (1696–1763). Friedrich August II systematically transformed the Dresden paintings collection into one of the most important of its kind in Europe both in scale and quality, with its outstanding holdings of Dutch, Flemish, and Italian art (both northern and central). An exceptional group of Italian paintings in Dresden was isolated in the Inner Gallery with only very few works from other schools added. The aim here was to compare different Italian schools and artists. The Dresden display is novel in its more precise focus and repeated invitations to connoisseurial judgments.
