Abstract

The Duc de Choiseul (1719â85) was one of the pre-eminent collectors of Dutch and Flemish paintings of the eighteenth-century. Like the Comtesse de Verrue, he spread his collection of Netherlandish painting throughout his house and mingled it with contemporary French painting, while for a first time Italian painting played a negligible role. Marrying into the powerful Crozat family allowed him to live in the rue de Richelieu house built by Pierre Crozat, one of the pioneers of the kind of comparative hang we describe in this volume. Jean de Jullienne and Choiseul are, in France, the only collectors whose displays are documented to a degree more usual in Germany, in Choiseulâs case by a tabatiÃ¨re, the famous Choiseul Box (Paris, MusÃ¨e du Louvre), a gold box adorned with painstaking replicas of his rooms and their decoration.
